Athletes have used flexibility training for centuries as part of their preparation.  As long as it has been a part of sport, questions on its effectiveness have been raised.  This course aims to answer those questions through a combination of lecture and hands on application.  This one day 6 or 8 hour seminar will take the therapist through the principles of flexibility training including why it is important, what are the obstacles to stretching, and considerations when developing a program.  The all important issue of whether stretching is detrimental will be discussed utilizing the current research to help answer the question.  For the practical component, three popular methods of flexibility training: static stretching, PNF/Muscle Energy, and Active Isolated Stretching, will be discussed with instruction on how to perform each.  Hands-on practice sessions will allow the therapist to experience each method first hand and evaluate their effectiveness.  Finally, a relatively new method knows as dynamic warm-up or dynamic flexibility training will be introduced and its principles discussed.

Advanced Clinical Sports Massage Therapy – 16 Hours

This in depth course explores the use of clinical massage therapy as a safe and effective treatment technique for use in a variety of settings.  This is a two day 16 hour CE course that combines a dynamic classroom experience with extensive hands-on sessions. The course will begin by discussing what it means to treat clinically including treatment approach, how to work with injuries, understanding contraindications, and the use of clinical reasoning in treatment decisions.  Participants will be taught several advanced massage strokes while discussing the mechanics of stroke posture, client positioning, and the use of tools to increase the effectiveness of the techniques. The theory and treatment techniques of Trigger Points will be taught and applied during the hands-on sessions.  Next, the body will be broken down into regions and the important surface anatomy and various muscles will be identified.  The various trigger point releases and advanced stroke techniques will be applied to each region to demonstrate a release of the tissues.  Hands-on practice sessions will be included after each region is taught so the practitioner will be able to comfortably integrate these skills into their practices.  Finally, the application of these techniques in the sports setting will be discussed along with active stretching techniques.
